Theme.   The history of London.

Мета:  Ознайомити учнів з історією м. Лондона, систематизувати навички діалогічного мовлення за темою „ Географічне положення Великобританії”, розвивати навички роботи з картою, та навички аудіювання, прививати інтерес до вивчення англійської мови, історії, культури Великобританії.

Обладнання: карта Великобританії, магнітофон, „flash cards”з теми « Географічне положення Великобританії» аудіозапис тексту « From the history of London”

                                        Хід уроку

1. Оргмомент.

       Today I am happy to tell you that we are going to speak about one of the greatest  cities of the world. I mean London, of course. I hope you know that London is a capital city. So what country is it a capital of? Yes, exactly so, it is the capital of the U. K. of G. B. and N. I. But by the way do you know where the country is situated? I am interested in this matter. But before we start speaking about London I’d like you to recollect some necessary geographical names.

3. Робота в парах:  складання діалогу за темою „Географічне положення Великобританії”. Учні отримують картки з завданням.

    You live in Ukraine and dream of visiting the United Kingdom. So you come to our travelling agency and try to get some more detailed information about the geographical position of the state and the ways you may travel to it.  ( На підготовку 3 хв.)

  Well, now we know everything about the geographical position of the state and now I’d like you to get some information about the history of it’s capital.

a)     Listen to the text and try to fix as many dates from the history of London as possible. 

But before you start listening pay special attention to the unknown words written on the blackboard.

б) Аудіювання.

      London was founded by the Romans in 43 A. D. with in the Claudian conquest and was called Londinium. The city was a propitious site for a military base. In 61 A. D. the town was burnt down. So when London was rebuilt by the Romans it was surrounded by the wall. That area within the wall is now called the city  of London.

   When William the  Conqueror conquered English in 10 66 he made London his base. He built the Tower of London and was crowned at Westminster Abbey.

   During the Middle Ages many churches and monasteries were built in London Merchants and craftsmen lived inside the City walls and worked in particular areas.

During the Tubor period (16^th century) London become an important and financial centre. The Londoners of the Elithabethian period built the first theatres.

   In June 1665 the greatest epidemic of plague broke out in London. Few people recovered from it. Only the cold weather in December stopped it at last.

1666 was the year of Great Fire of London which destroyed most of the city. On September 2, the fire broke out in Pudding Lane. After the fire many building were rebuilt in much safer way.

  During the Victorian period (19^th century) London was one of most important centers of the Industrial Revolution and the centre of the British Empire.

 Today London is a cosmopolitan city and it’s population is almost 8 million people.

7. Розвиток навичок читання та перекладу.

учні отримують текст „ The Monument to Great Fire”  (Ланцюжок)

    The Monument was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in collaboration with Robert Hook and erected in 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire. the Portland stone fluted column is 202 feet high surmounted by a platform and toped by a gilded  flaming urn.

The height is reputed to be the exact distance from where the fire started.
